Our Mission:
Expanding Possibility Through Representation

Imagine a world where every child, regardless of race, background, or circumstance, can see themselves in a variety of careers.

When children see themselves reflected in the books they read and the professionals they meet, they develop stronger beliefs about what’s possible for their future. Research shows that children who see diverse role models in literature are 43% more likely to aspire to careers in those fields.

Doctors Like Me is a children’s book series created to make that world possible.

The series follows Eli, a curious and imaginative 7-year-old Black boy whose understanding of what’s possible expands as he meets Black physicians across different medical specialties. Through these encounters, Eli gains more than knowledge about medicine. He gains role models, confidence, and the belief that he, too, belongs in these spaces.

The idea for Doctors Like Me grew from real experiences. While interviewing medical school applicants, I repeatedly heard a striking pattern: many had never met a Black physician until their late teens or early twenties. That realization became even more powerful when paired with research showing that children begin forming career stereotypes as early as age four.

As both an educator and a mother, I understand the profound influence children’s literature has on shaping identity, confidence, and possibility. Doctors Like Me was created to be that spark. Through vibrant illustrations and engaging storytelling, children will:

# Learn basic concepts about medicine and healthcare
# See diverse representation in various medical roles
# Discover that career paths aren’t limited by race or background
# Be inspired to pursue their own interests with confidence

If we want to diversify the physician workforce, we must start earlier by helping young children imagine themselves in these roles long before doubt takes root.

Why These Books Matter: The Power of Representation

A Bit More About our Work

When was the last time a child saw someone who looked like them in
the pages of a book?

For many Black children, that moment is still far too rare. While Black children make up approximately 15% of the U.S. child population, fewer
than 12% of children’s books feature Black characters, and the number drops even further when those books highlight professional careers
like medicine.

This lack of representation isn’t just disappointing. It’s limiting.

Research shows that children begin forming ideas about who belongs
in certain careers as early as age four. Yet many Black students do not encounter a Black physician until college. As a result, Black physicians
make up only 5.7% of the medical workforce today.

Representation changes that trajectory.

When children see themselves reflected in stories about science and medicine, their interest in those fields increases by 43%. Seeing
someone who looks like them in a white coat doesn’t just inspire, it
expands what they believe is possible.

Our Impact: Shaping the Future,
One Story at a Time

Doctors Like Me is more than a book series. It’s a tool for change.

By placing diverse physicians at the center of joyful, empowering stories, we help children:

● Envision themselves in respected, impactful careers

● Build confidence and curiosity about science and medicine

● Develop a sense of belonging in spaces where they have been historically underrepresented

These stories create both mirrors and windows. Mirrors for children to see themselves reflected with
pride, and windows for others to appreciate the richness of diverse experiences.

Together, we can help raise a generation that doesn’t question whether they belong in medicine,
or any field at all.

Because as Eli learns in Doctors Like Me, sometimes all it takes is seeing someone who looks like
you doing something extraordinary to realize that you can, too.
